If you eat only one local thing in Shenzhen, make it Cantonese roast meat. The shops hang whole roast geese, ducks, and strips of glossy char siu pork in the window, chop it to order, and serve it over rice. It is fast, cheap by local standards, and about as Shenzhen as a meal gets. Here is what visitors should know before walking in.
What you are ordering
The big three are easy to tell apart, even with no Chinese:
- Char siu — sweet, red-glazed BBQ pork. The most foreigner-friendly starting point.
- Roast duck — rich, savory, with crisp skin.
- Roast goose — a Cantonese specialty; denser meat and a stronger flavor than duck.
You usually get it sliced over rice (shaola fan) or with noodles.
How to order without a menu
Most roast-meat shops do not really have a menu you read. You point at the meat in the window and hold up fingers or use your phone to show how you want it served — over rice or with noodles. It takes under a minute.
- Point at the meat you want.
- Say or show “rice” (fan) or “noodles” (fen/mian).
- Pay by WeChat Pay or Alipay; carry a little cash as backup.
On price: expect to be surprised by goose
Roast meat is generally cheap, but goose is the exception. A single roast goose leg at a famous old shop can cost much more than visitors expect — sometimes several times the price of duck or char siu. This is not a scam aimed at tourists; goose is simply a premium meat in Cantonese cooking, and well-known shops charge accordingly.
- If you want to keep it cheap, order char siu or duck over rice.
- If you want the specialty, ask the price of the goose first, then decide.
- Long-running shops (some 30+ years old) charge more for name and history, not just for meat.
Where to find it
Roast-meat shops are everywhere, but Luohu and the lanes around Huaqiangbei are dense with old, well-regarded ones. A busy shop with a constant stream of locals is usually a safe choice — turnover keeps the meat fresh.
