One of the best things about Shenzhen for a visitor is how easy it is to pop over to Hong Kong for the day and come back the same evening. The two cities sit right next to each other, and there are several ways to cross. This guide covers the main options so you can pick the one that fits your schedule.
Two ways to think about the crossing
There are two broad ways to get from Shenzhen to Hong Kong: by high-speed train, or by metro to a land border crossing. Both require passing through immigration on the way out and on the way back, so keep your passport and any needed visa ready.
- High-speed train: faster and more comfortable, but you depart from a specific rail station.
- Metro to a border point: cheaper and very frequent, good if you are near a border station.
Option 1: High-speed train
You can take a high-speed train from Shenzhen to Hong Kong. The main rail stations on the Shenzhen side are Futian Station and Shenzhen North Station. Futian is closer to central Shenzhen; Shenzhen North is larger but farther out.
- Trains are fast and run often through the day.
- Immigration is handled at the station before you board.
- Book your ticket in advance if you can, especially on weekends and holidays.
Option 2: Metro to a border crossing
The other common route is to take the Shenzhen metro to a border checkpoint, walk through immigration, and continue on the Hong Kong side. This is a popular everyday route and runs very frequently.
- Have your passport and visa ready at immigration.
- Allow extra time on weekends and public holidays, when lines get long.
- On the Hong Kong side, the MTR connects you onward.
Same-day trip tips
- Start early so you are not rushing back through immigration in the evening.
- Check your return option before you go, so you know the last train or crossing time.
- Keep some cash for both sides, and have your payment apps set up.
Staying near the right station
If a same-day Hong Kong trip is part of your plan, it helps to stay near Futian Station or a border-area metro station. That keeps both your outbound and return trips short.
